American Daydreams - Katie Morgan Work Review

The diner is bright, chrome, and smells of french fries. PENNY (Katie Morgan) is wiping down the counter, wearing a pink uniform with a white apron. She is humming a showtune.

A CUSTOMER, MR. HENDERSON (60s), sits with a newspaper.

Penny turns to the coffee machine. She stares at the steam rising.

VISUAL FX: The steam swirls violently. The diner sounds (clinking forks, chatter) fade out, replaced by the sound of a tropical jungle. The linoleum floor turns into lush grass. A vine swings down. American Daydreams - Katie Morgan WORK

Suddenly, Penny isn’t in a diner; she’s in a leopard-print dress, standing on a tree branch. MR. HENDERSON is now a DISTINCTIVE VILLAIN in a white suit, holding a martini glass.

Penny leaps from the counter—now a cliff—doing a flip in slow motion. She lands perfectly behind the register.

SNAP BACK TO REALITY:

Penny is standing behind the register, holding a coffee pot, staring blankly into space. She is doing a "hero landing" pose on the rubber mat.

MR. HENDERSON stares at her.

She pours the coffee, missing the cup slightly and spilling it on the saucer. The diner is bright, chrome, and smells of french fries

The "WORK" setting is universally relatable. Everyone has had a boring office job. Everyone has looked at a coworker and wondered. Unlike a $100,000 budget sci-fi fetish film, American Daydreams costs very little to imagine. Morgan’s performance acts as a wish-fulfillment vehicle for the working class.
