ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಸಣ್ಣ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಹೊಲಗಳು ಹಸಿರು, ನದಿ ತುಂಬಾ ಮೃದುವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಪ್ರತೀ ಸಂಜೆ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗರು ಮೈಕೆಲಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಕಡೆಯ ದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಮರ — ಕಂಬಿ ಮರ — ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ವಿಶೇಷ. ಪೊಲೀ (ಮರದ ಪಾದದ) ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಮಡುಗಟು ಅಧಸ್ತರವಾಗಿ ಕಂಬಿತಾಗಿ ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು; ಅದನ್ನೆเรีย್ಥೆಗ್ "ಅಮ್ಮ ಕಂಬಿ".
