This is the biggest shift. Popular entertainment now includes video game cinematics. Studios like Riot Games (Arcane), CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners), and Blizzard (Warcraft) are producing animated series that surpass most Hollywood films in quality. The line between "gaming studio" and "animation studio" is gone.
The Japanese studio system is a different beast. Dominated by Toho (Godzilla) and Toei (Dragon Ball, One Piece, Super Sentai/Power Rangers), these studios produce anime and tokusatsu (live-action special effects) that commands billions of fans.
Interactive entertainment now rivals film in revenue and cultural impact.
Popular entertainment is no longer "Hollywood entertainment." Some of the most watched productions on the planet come from studios outside the United States.
