He tabbed back in. The kitchen light flickered.

The "cracked signed" part of the filename flashed in his mind. He had thought it referred to a digital signature—a way to bypass the operating system's security checks. He realized now, with horrifying clarity, what he had actually done.
He hadn't just bypassed the game's DRM. He had signed a contract. He had given the malware root-level permissions, disguised as a game file, access to his network, his hardware, and his home automation system.
The smart lights in his actual room began to strobe red, matching the Sanity Meter on the screen.
He heard the lock on his physical front door click.
