Malcolm and his family find a wounded Caesar and take him to his childhood home—the house of Will Rodman (from the first film). Malcolm retrieves medical supplies to save Caesar. Caesar realizes he was wrong to trust that the apes could simply coexist without conflict.
Malcolm leads Caesar to the city, where Caesar confronts Koba. They fight on a tower. During the fight, Koba fires wildly at the apes, injuring his own followers. This proves to the apes that Koba is unfit to lead. Caesar overpowers Koba and lets him dangle from a ledge. Koba pleads for his life, citing "Ape not kill ape." Caesar, realizing Koba is no longer a true ape but a monster, drops him to his death.

Believing Caesar is dead and the humans attacked them unprovoked, the ape army falls under Koba’s command. They launch a full-scale assault on the human settlement in San Francisco. The apes overrun the city, capturing the human armory. Koba, now drunk on power, begins killing humans and even orders the death of Ash when Ash refuses to kill unarmed humans, breaking Caesar's philosophy.
Malcolm returns to the woods to ask Caesar for permission to work on the dam. Caesar, seeing the potential for war if they refuse, agrees, but forbids the humans from bringing guns. Malcolm and his family find a wounded Caesar
A tense coexistence begins. Over time, Caesar and Malcolm develop a mutual respect. However, distrust runs deep on both sides. Koba, Caesar’s scarred lieutenant who was tortured by humans in the past, hates them passionately. Koba discovers the humans have a hidden armory of weapons in the city. He confronts Caesar, accusing him of loving humans more than apes. In a rage, Caesar beats Koba but stops short of killing him, adhering to the ape law: "Ape not kill ape."
