Like the base game, Eastern Sun characters use the .d2s extension. However, an Eastern Sun character file contains data that vanilla Diablo 2 does not recognize (such as new unique items, map reveals for mod-specific areas, and mod-specific stats).
Crucial Rule: You generally cannot load an Eastern Sun save file into vanilla Diablo 2 without risking corruption, nor can you load a vanilla save into Eastern Sun without issues, as the item databases are totally different.
