Sometimes, you just need a break. The "green dot" of voice activity signals readiness to engage. Fake deafen is a psychological tool. It tells your brain: "You are off the hook." You can relax, listen to music, or do chores while still technically present. It’s the digital equivalent of putting on headphones at a family gathering—you can still hear, but no one expects you to talk.

A fake deafen plugin is a third-party modification (often an addon for client mods like BetterDiscord, OpenAsar, or Vencord) designed to decouple the "Deafen" button from its actual function. Sometimes, you just need a break

A fake deafen plugin attempts to trick the client into displaying the "Deafened" icon to other users while allowing you to continue hearing the audio in the channel.

There was a community plugin for BetterDiscord called FakeDeafen (now largely abandoned). How did it work? It didn't hack the deafen button. It forced your system audio output to zero volume.

The Problem: It was clumsy. It lowered the volume of all applications, not just Discord. If you were playing a game, you went deaf there too. Furthermore, other users could still see your "deafen" icon if Discord's client state glitched. Because BetterDiscord injects code directly into Discord's memory, Discord’s auto-updater would break the plugin weekly. Eventually, Discord scanned for BetterDiscord injections and flagged accounts for Terms of Service violations.
