A failed firmware update can permanently brick the J1 version (no recovery mode without serial console). Follow this checklist:
A typical J1 firmware file looks like: DSL-2750U_J1_1.0.18_11022014.bin or J1_1.0.22
Do not download files labelled B1, C1, U1, or T1 – they are incompatible.
Update only if:
If you just bought a used J1 unit with a very old firmware (e.g., 2014 or earlier), definitely update – you’re currently open to known remote code execution exploits.
D-Link no longer hosts some older regional firmware directly on their global site. However, authorized distributors and regional D-Link support pages still provide them.
