Hardware: Custom desktop, ASUS Z790 motherboard, Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD.
Problem: The builder disabled VMD in BIOS (to reduce latency), but downloaded the latest "Intel RST VMD" driver from the support page.
Solution: They actually needed the nonvmd version, or they could have just re-enabled VMD in BIOS to match the VMD driver.
Once you have identified the correct driver (e.g., f6flpyx64vmdzip), here is how to use it. The process is identical for both.
Intel VMD is a controller built into the PCIe root complex of modern Intel chipsets (like the 500, 600, and 700 series). It allows the CPU to directly manage and “remap” NVMe SSDs and RAID volumes directly from the PCIe bus. f6flpyx64nonvmdzip and f6flpyx64vmdzip
While VMD enables "hot-swapping" of SSDs and better error handling, it also hides the physical drives from the standard Windows installer.
Warning: Never download these drivers from "driver download" websites. They are commonly packaged with malware. Use only official sources. Hardware: Custom desktop, ASUS Z790 motherboard, Samsung 980
