The biggest talking point of the film was its star cast. Hero served as the debut vehicle for Sooraj Pancholi (son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab) and Athiya Shetty (daughter of actor Suniel Shetty).
The 2015 Hero follows the same basic premise as the original but with a contemporary twist.
The story revolves around Sooraj Kaushik (Sooraj Pancholi), a reckless, hot-headed gangster’s son who lives in the shadow of his powerful father. He falls head over heels for Radha Mathur (Athiya Shetty), the beautiful and principled daughter of a police officer (played by Aditya Pancholi).
When Radha is reluctantly engaged to another man, Sooraj impulsively kidnaps her. What begins as a forced road trip turns into a journey of self-discovery and genuine romance. However, trouble follows them. A powerful villain (played by Tigmanshu Dhulia) enters the fray, leading to a violent climax where Sooraj must prove he is more than just a criminal—he must become a Hero.
When you hear the title Hero, most Bollywood fans immediately think of the 1983 classic that launched Jackie Shroff. So when Nikhil Advani announced a remake in 2015 starring newcomers Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty, the skepticism was loud and understandable.
But here’s the thing: dismissing the 2017-released (delayed from 2015) Hero as just another forgettable remake would be a mistake. While it didn't set the box office on fire, this film is a fascinating time capsule of mid-2010s Bollywood and offers genuine value for certain viewers.
If there is one undisputed winner of Hero (2015), it is the soundtrack. Composed by the legendary duo Salim-Sulaiman with lyrics by A. M. Turaz, the album was a massive hit.
Even today, these songs have more longevity than the film’s plot. You’ll still hear Main Hoon Hero Tera on romantic playlists across the country.
