Hilook | Nvr Software

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5) Best for: Small business owners, home users on a budget, or those needing basic H.265+ recording.

Hilook is the value brand of Hikvision (the world’s largest security camera manufacturer). As such, the Hilook NVR software is essentially a stripped-down, slightly older version of Hikvision’s iVMS-4200. Here is the breakdown.

Let’s be honest: Most NVR (Network Video Recorder) software feels like it was designed by engineers for engineers. You click through five menus just to change a password, and the live view looks like a NASA control panel.

Then there’s HiLook.

If you haven’t heard of HiLook, it’s Hikvision’s "value" brand. Think of it as the Toyota Corolla of security systems—not flashy, but reliable, cheap to run, and surprisingly capable. And the software? That’s where the magic happens. hilook nvr software

I spent a week testing the HiLook NVR software (both the local interface via a monitor and the mobile app). Here’s what I learned.

Solution: The software may have crashed the drive. Go to Maintenance > Hard Drive Management. Select the drive and click "Repair." If that fails, you may need to physically format the drive via a PC and re-install it.

Let’s walk through the initial setup process for a standard HiLook NVR (e.g., the NVR-101 series or 201 series).

Step 1: Hardware Connection

Step 2: The Initial Wizard Upon booting up, the embedded software launch a "Startup Wizard." You will:

Step 3: IP Camera Activation The software will automatically list all connected cameras. It will ask you to create a "Camera Password." For ease, you can use the same password as the NVR. Click "Initialize" and "Add." The cameras will appear as blue screens briefly, then show live video.

Step 4: Network Configuration (Port Forwarding) To use the mobile app, the NVR needs to be online.

Step 5: Recording Schedule

Solution: Since there is no "reset" button on many HiLook NVRs, you must use the SADP (Search Active Devices Protocol) tool. Download Hikvision SADP on a Windows PC on the same network as the NVR. It will find the NVR and allow you to export an "XML reset file." Send that file to Hikvision support (or use the security question you set up in the wizard).

The software utilizes Hikvision’s proprietary H.265+ compression technology. This is a game-changer for storage. Compared to standard H.264, H.265+ reduces bitrate and storage requirements by over 70%. This means you can keep footage for 30 days on a smaller hard drive without sacrificing video quality.

Most NVRs force you to watch 8 hours of footage to find the one time the mailman threw a package. HiLook’s software includes a simplified version of Hikvision’s "Smart Search."

Here’s how it works:
Draw a box on the screen where the motion happened (e.g., the driveway). Hit "Search." The software instantly jumps to only the moments where something moved in that box. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5) Best for: Small business owners,

Real-world test: I found a dog peeing on my flowers in 20 seconds instead of 15 minutes.
