The tension is not "will they?" but "how long can they survive?" The tragedy often provides more emotional resonance than a happy ending, because it speaks to the reality that love is not always enough to conquer the world.

Modern audiences are sophisticated. They have seen the "love triangle" fail a thousand times. They have seen the "grand gesture" (running through an airport) become a parody. To write fresh relationships and romantic storylines, you must subvert expectations intelligently.
