Mivel a Kenguru nem a tanmenetre épül, a felkészülés sem a tankönyv lapozgatásából áll. Íme a leghatékonyabb módszerek:
a) Oldjunk meg korábbi feladatokat! A hivatalos honlap (www.kenguru.hu) évekig visszamenőleg elérhetővé teszi a feladatsorokat és a megoldásokat. Töltsünk le 3-5 korábbi évet, és próbáljunk meg egy-egy szintidős tesztet. kenguru matematika verseny
b) Játsszunk logikai játékokat! A sakk, a Sudoku, a Rubik-kocka, vagy akár az online logikai játékok (pl. Set, Mastermind) kiválóan fejlesztik azt a fajta gondolkodást, amit a verseny kér.

e) Ne az idő ellen versenyezz! A 75 perc soknak tűnhet, de a nehezebb 5 pontos feladatok akár 10 percet is igényelhetnek. Célszerű először az összes 3 pontos feladatot gyorsan megoldani, majd jöhetnek a 4 pontosok, és legvégül a nehezek.
