The electoral results are mixed. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Uddhav-led faction (Shiv Sena (UBT)) won 9 seats in Maharashtra. The Shinde faction won 7. While the BJP dominated, Uddhav proved he wasn't extinct. He had survived the decapitation strike.

But the problem for Maharashtra Desha is structural.

Where the original Sena relied on the Maratha and Malvani coastal belts, Uddhav’s Maharashtra Desha has made surprising inroads. By allying with the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), Uddhav has softened his party's historical anti-North Indian and hardline Hindutva edges.

His target voter is the disillusioned Maratha—a community feeling squeezed by the OBC politics of the Shinde-BJP regime. He is also quietly courting the Muslim voter, not by flattering them, but by positioning himself as the only bulwark against a "saffron tsunami." In return, Muslims in urban Maharashtra now see Uddhav as the lesser evil, a pragmatic alliance that keeps the Sena’s old Hindu Hriday Samrat slogan silent.

The term Maharashtra Desha is not new. It dates back to the era of the Maratha Empire, specifically to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who envisioned Swarajya (self-rule) for the Marathi-speaking lands. For the Thackeray faction, invoking "Desha" is a deliberate attempt to outflank the Shinde faction on the issue of regional pride. maharashtra desha uddhav thackeray

For five decades, the Shiv Sena was defined by two pillars: Marathi Manus (the Marathi-speaking man) and Hindutva. Balasaheb Thackeray wielded these as twin swords. But after 2022, Uddhav found himself stripped of the party name and the bow-and-arrow symbol. The Election Commission handed the legacy to Shinde.

What was Uddhav left with? A rump of loyalists, a wounded family legacy, and a burning question: What does the Shiv Sena mean without its original name?

Uddhav’s answer has been radical for a man often dismissed as "soft." He has doubled down on geography over religion.

"We are not just a party," Uddhav declared at a rally in Shivaji Park last winter. "We are Maharashtra Desha. The pride of the land, the language, and the sons of the soil."

Like many government projects of this magnitude, "Maharashtra Desha" faced its share of challenges. Historically, such projects have been criticized for political bias—selectively including or omitting historical figures based on the ruling party's ideology. Critics questioned whether the narratives compiled would be objective or tailored to suit the political narrative of the MVA government.

However, Thackeray maintained that the project was an academic endeavor involving renowned historians and scholars, aimed at truth rather than propaganda.
