The story of Marathi dance is best told through its distinct forms, each with a unique history and purpose.
Perhaps the most famous export of Marathi folk culture, Lavani originated in the 17th and 18th centuries.

This is not just a flatbread. It is the finale of every celebration. The story of Puran Poli is the story of patience—soaking chana dal, boiling it, straining it, simmering it for hours with jaggery and cardamom until the puran (filling) leaves the sides of the pan. Rolling it perfectly without breaking the outer shell is an art passed down from Ajji (grandmother). Eaten with tup (ghee) and katachi amti (the leftover spicy dal water), it defines the phrase "comfort food."
In the bustling state of Maharashtra, amidst the narrow wadis (lanes) of Pune, the high-rises of Mumbai, or the quiet pada (hamlets) of the rural Konkan, there exists a unique, almost poetic, social concept: Zavazavi (proximity/neighborliness). The phrase "Marathi Zavazavi Chi Katha" is not just a story about living next door; it is a heartfelt narrative about interdependence, unspoken understanding, and the subtle art of sharing life without boundaries. Marathi Zavazavi Chi Katha
The Marathi Zavazavi Chi Katha is ultimately a story of resilience. It is the story of farmers eating Bhakri-Thecha to work the tough land. It is the story of mothers waking up at 5 AM to grind masala for the family. It is the story of festivals where the entire neighborhood sits on the floor, eating from banana leaves.
When a Marathi person says, "Aaj Khup Chaan Zavazavi Jhali" (Today, we had a great feast), they are not just talking about a full stomach. They are talking about a full heart. It is the taste of the rain on the black soil, the heat of the Kolhapur chili, and the sweetness of the jaggery—all in one bite.
And that, is the true story of Marathi Zavazavi.
Khup Chaan! (Very Good!)
So, what is Marathi Zavazavi Chi Katha?
It is the story of the sea salt on your lips in Ratnagiri. It is the story of the smoky bhakri baked on a chulha (clay stove) in a Malegaon village. It is the story of the matki usal served in a college canteen in Kolhapur. It is the story of a mother packing a pyalachya bhaaji (onion curry) for her daughter who is moving abroad.
It is simple. It is fiery. It is sour. It is sweet. It is Zhakaas (marvelous).
The next time you sit down for a Maharashtrian thali, do not rush. Look at the steel plate. See the phodni (tempering) of mustard seeds popping in hot oil. Listen to the crackle of the bhakri. Taste the zavazavi. The story of Marathi dance is best told
As they say in the villages of Satara: "Tupatli bhaji ani bhakricha zana... mhanje khara Maharashtra ahe yatha." (A curry flowing with ghee and a bhakri to dip—that is the real Maharashtra).
Jevla ka? (Did you eat?)... If not, go find your own Zavazavi today.
The story of this proximity begins with the traditional Maharashtrian Wada—a large, multi-story structure with a central courtyard. Here, families lived in close quarters, yet rarely felt cramped. The Zavazavi was not by accident but by design. The walls were thin, but so were the egos. The aajoba (grandfather) on the first floor would know if the kaku (aunt) on the ground floor had a fever, and the ladies' chopal (meeting area) was where gossip, solutions, and sheera (sweet semolina) were distributed in equal measure.

EPANET was a gift to the industry — free, open-source water modeling for all. But commercial vendors built on it, locked away improvements, and left the community behind.
epanet-js is our answer: a faster, simpler, affordable water modeling tool that protects your privacy and sustains the open-source future of water modeling.
We're proud to be part of the next chapter — and we're just getting started.

When you purchase more features in epanet-js, you're investing in the future of open-source EPANET development.
Our open-source model balances innovation and accessibility:
Anyone can build on our code. The two-year commercial-use delay gives us the incentive to keep pushing forward — and that fuels progress for everyone.
That means when you support us, you support more affordable hydraulic modeling software for the entire community.

You may not know this, but for decades, the U.S. EPA has given the water industry an extraordinary gift: the free and open-source hydraulic modeling software EPANET. Odds are, if you've used any commercial hydraulic modeling software today, it was built on the EPANET engine.
The problem is, instead of giving back to their open-source roots like other industries do, big-name software vendors took EPANET's open code, built private tools on top of the engine, and then locked those improvements behind patents and proprietary licenses.
Some vendors even pressured the EPA to focus only on the engine — discouraging any effort to improve the interface or user experience for everyone else.
Those vendors now charge you exorbitant prices to use their software while EPANET lags behind — and utilities, engineers, and educators with smaller budgets suffer.
We think this is backwards — and we're on a mission to change it. We're focused on creating a better experience for the entire hydraulic modeling community.
That's why we built epanet-js under an FSL license — because we want to give you an affordable, easy-to-use water modeling option that creates a sustainable future for open-source EPANET development.
