Rating: 6/10
"Monk Comes Down the Mountain" is a visual feast that suffers from an identity crisis. It offers entertaining performances and stunning martial arts action, but the messy script and tonal inconsistencies prevent it from reaching the heights of director Chen Kaige's earlier masterpieces.
Who should watch this? Fans of Chinese fantasy cinema (like The Monkey King or Tai Chi Zero) and admirers of Wang Baoqiang will likely find enjoyment in the spectacle. However, viewers looking for a tight, cohesive narrative may find it frustrating.

Discovering the Martial Arts Fantasy: Monk Comes Down the Mountain (2015)
If you have been browsing through download sites or streaming libraries lately, you might have stumbled upon a title that sounds like a classic fable: Monk Comes Down the Mountain. Directed by the legendary Chen Kaige (the visionary behind Farewell My Concubine), this 2015 film is a vibrant, sometimes "bonkers" blend of wuxia action, philosophical inquiry, and broad comedy.
Whether you found it on a platform like Netflix or saw it listed on various movie portals, here is everything you need to know about this unique cinematic journey. The Story: A Rite of Passage
Set in 1930s China, the film follows He Anxia (played by Wang Baoqiang), a naive young Taoist monk who is forced to leave his impoverished monastery after winning a competition for food. His master sends him "down the mountain" not as a punishment, but to experience the "real world" and learn about human nature.
What follows is an episodic adventure where Anxia encounters a series of masters and eccentric characters, each teaching him a different lesson about life, greed, and martial arts. His path crosses with:
Cui Daoning (Fan Wei): A kind-hearted doctor and former monk who takes Anxia in as an apprentice.
Zhou Xiyu (Aaron Kwok): A lowly temple-sweeper who hides a past as a master of the deadly Ape Strike technique.
Boss Zha (Chang Chen): An opera star with incredible spear-fighting skills. A Feast for the Eyes (and Ears)
The film is known for its high production value. Originally released in IMAX 3D, it features lush cinematography by Geoffrey Simpson and a score by George Acogny. The action choreography—ranging from cartoonish wire-work to authentic martial arts—often draws comparisons to the "hyper-cartoonish" style of Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle.
