However, for simulation only: Siemens offers SinuTrain for free. SinuTrain includes a virtual 828D logic environment. You can learn 100% of the programming tool functions without buying a license, but you cannot connect to a real machine. For students, this is the actual top download.

The most powerful and current PLC programming tool for the 828D is TIA Portal V15.1, V16, or V17 (depending on your controller’s firmware).

How to download (Legal & Official Route):

Contrary to some misconceptions, the SINUMERIK 828D does not use a separate, obscure PLC tool. It is programmed directly within Siemens STEP 7 Professional as part of the TIA Portal (Totally Integrated Automation Portal) .

The 828D controller runs a specialized PLC (often an S7-200 or S7-300 derivative based on the firmware), and TIA Portal is the official Siemens environment for ladder logic (LAD), function block diagram (FBD), or statement list (STL) programming.
