Every Samsung CLX-3185 toner cartridge (Black CLT-K506S, Cyan CLT-C506S, Magenta CLT-M506S, Yellow CLT-Y506S) contains a small circuit board called a CRUM (Customer Replaceable Unit Monitor) chip. This chip communicates with the printer’s motherboard via I2C protocol.
Pre-2012 CLX-3185 cartridges had a mechanical gear that could be rotated to reset the counter. Locate the white gear on the side of the cartridge. Turn it counter-clockwise until it clicks (21 clicks for full reset). This does not work on newer cartridges with fully electronic chips.
Here’s the hard truth: Samsung never released an official “toner reset firmware.” The .rar archives circulating on sketchy forums claim to “patch” your printer’s EEPROM. What they really do: Printer Toner Reset Firmware Fix Samsung Clx 3185.rar
I’ve seen it happen too many times. Do not download, extract, or run anything inside that archive.
Samsung’s official firmware (versions between 2009 and 2014) uses aggressive counting algorithms. It does not measure actual toner powder. Instead, it: I’ve seen it happen too many times
Even if you refill a cartridge to 100% capacity, the chip tells the printer it’s at 0%. The firmware believes the chip, not your eyes.
Brands like LD Products, V4INK, or Smartek sell cartridges with pre-installed auto-reset chips. They cost $25-30 vs. Samsung’s $80. No firmware fix needed – they advertise themselves as full to the printer on every boot. Even if you refill a cartridge to 100%
Unlike modern printers, the CLX-3185 has a backdoor:
