Holy Grail: The Navarro-era "Circle of the Noose" – only one low-quality demo exists. This song was planned for a follow-up album but scrapped. red hot chili peppers discografia unreleased
This era is unique: 17 songs were recorded, 14 on IWY, and the other 9 released as I’m Beside You (vinyl B-sides).
So no unreleased material from this era – all circulating songs are official.
But one truly unreleased track exists:
Guitarist John Frusciante is notoriously prolific, often recording entire albums in the downtime between Chili Peppers tours. His influence on the band's unreleased catalog is significant. During the sessions for Californication (1999) and By the Way (2002), the band reportedly wrote enough material for several double albums. Producer Rick Rubin, known for his "quality over quantity" approach, curated the tracklists, leaving dozens of completed songs on the cutting room floor.
Titles like "Bunker Hill," "Waterfall," and "Multiple" have circulated among fans for years, offering a softer, more melodic counterpoint to the high-energy singles. Frusciante himself released many songs from these eras on his solo records, but the "pure" Chili Peppers versions of these tracks remain a holy grail for collectors. The sheer volume of melodic rock material written during the early 2000s suggests a band at the absolute peak of their songwriting powers, exploring avenues that commercial constraints forced them to abandon. With Dave Navarro, many songs were written but scrapped
The holy grail. The band recorded 38 songs for the album, releasing 28 across the Jupiter and Mars discs. That leaves 10 complete, mastered, unreleased tracks. They include:
The most legendary: "Desire" (not to be confused with the George Clinton track). A 7-minute epic with a tempo change, a Frusciante outro solo that lasts 2 minutes, and lyrics about addiction and rebirth. Engineer Ryan Hewitt has confirmed the master exists. Why hasn’t it been released? In a 2016 interview, Flea said, “We’re saving some for the Stadium Arcadium 30th anniversary.” Holy Grail: The Navarro-era "Circle of the Noose"
