This is the only way to obtain a legal, offline copy. Look for the Microsoft Songsmith retail CD (usually sold in a jewel case). Price: $5–$15 used.

Warning: Even with the CD, the key on the back of the manual will fail online activation. However, some users report that installing without an internet connection using the CD key from the sticker sometimes bypasses the server check on Windows XP or Windows 7 legacy systems. This is not guaranteed.

Archive.org (The Wayback Machine) and similar digital libraries have preserved the original Songsmith installer. If you download from these sources, scan everything with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. These versions still require a product key, but some preservationists have posted "historical" keys that were once publicly distributed by Microsoft for review copies. Note: These are not cracks—they are legitimate keys from press kits that have since been deactivated but may still work offline.

If you purchased Songsmith legally back in the day, your product key could be in one of several places:

BandLab includes "SongStarter" – an AI tool that generates full backing tracks, drum loops, and chords instantly. No product key. No installation. Just sing over the generated beat.

Some users report the original Songsmith trial never truly expired—it simply watermarked exports. However, because the trial’s internal timer relied on a now-defunct server check, modern Windows installations often treat the software as already "expired" immediately. This is unreliable.
