For dedicated The Sims 3 players, custom content (CC) is the lifeblood of creativity. While Sims 3’s Create-a-Style (CASt) tool offers deep customization, nothing transforms a boxy EA living room into a cozy, lived-in home quite like third-party furniture. But where does all that new sofa, table, and clutter CC actually live? The answer is your Mods folder—specifically, its Packages subfolder—and understanding how to manage it is crucial for game performance.

Because furniture CC doesn’t conflict as often as script mods, you can organize it however you like. However, a chaotic Packages folder with hundreds of files will eventually cause:

Recommended Furniture Subfolder Structure (inside Mods/Packages/):

Packages/
├── 1_Furniture/
│ ├── LivingRoom/
│ ├── Bedroom/
│ ├── Kitchen/
│ ├── Bathroom/
│ └── Study_Office/
├── 2_Clutter_Decor/
│ ├── Plants/
│ ├── Rugs/
│ └── WallArt/
└── 3_Lighting_Appliances/

Note: This requires Resource.cfg to include Priority 500 PackedFile Packages/*/*/*.package to read three levels deep. Without that edit, keep furniture directly in Packages/Furniture/.

Unlike The Sims 4, which uses multiple folder locations, Sims 3 consolidates CC into one main directory. The furniture CC folder is not a special, separate folder—it’s a logical subfolder you create within the standard mod structure:

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Mods > Packages > Furniture

If you don’t see a Mods folder, you need to set it up manually:

Important: Unlike Sims 4, Sims 3 does not support subfolders deeper than one level inside Packages by default. You can enable multi-level subfolders by editing your Resource.cfg file, but most players keep furniture files directly in labeled folders like Furniture or Buy Mode.
