Older GPON networks shared 2.5 Gbps among 64 users. New XGS-PON (10-Gigabit Symmetric Passive Optical Networks) offers 10 Gbps shared among fewer users, with new "wavelength slicing" that allows for dedicated lanes. When a provider uses these next-gen optics, they can finally afford to uncap the whitespeed.
