To ensure her survival, Elena sacrifices herself in a ritual, but she is saved by a spell binding her soul to her father, John Gilbert, who dies in her place. At the end of Season 2, Elena kisses Damon, cementing a true love triangle. But tragedy strikes—Klaus bites Jenna (Elena's aunt) and kills her, leaving Elena orphaned once more.
The final season is a dark, gothic fever dream. The Devil (Cade) comes to Mystic Falls. Stefan and Damon must confront every sin they have ever committed to earn peace.
