Though textual, the “Exclusive” edition is described as incorporating gameplay-like mechanics into its prose or hypothetical design. For example, Youmu’s dialogue choices gradually shrink from multiple options to two—then to none. Her internal monologue, once polite and duty-bound, is invaded by italicized, all-caps commands: KILL THE LIVING. THE PHANTOM HUNGERS. This mimics the experience of playing a game where the player loses control of the protagonist. In one harrowing scene, Youmu attempts to warn Yuyuko of the possession, but the demon forces her to raise Roukanken against her mistress. Youmu’s last free action is to redirect the blade into her own chest—not to die, but to stall. The nightmare then resets. The akuma delights in this loop, telling her, “You are not half of two things. You are nothing of one.” This line encapsulates the story’s existential horror: identity is not a given but a performance, and when the performance cracks, there may be no self left to reclaim.
Youmu is reimagined in a dark, psychological setting. She becomes the protagonist of The Nightmare Taker, where she must escape dream worlds while fighting or succumbing to a demonic curse. The "Exclusive" tag could mean it was a limited demo at Comiket or a Patreon-only build.
More credible is the existence of a 2014 RPG Maker horror fangame called "The Nightmare Taker: Gensokyo’s Eclipse" (since deleted from Freem). In this game, Youmu is not the protagonist but a corrupted boss. The phrase akuma ni tsukareta appears in the game’s subtitle for a secret route unlocked only by finding seven hidden "weary spirit" items.
A user on the now-defunct Touhou Project English Forum described it: youmuinthe nightmaretaker akuma ni tsukareta exclusive
“You fight a version of Youmu whose phantom half has merged with a nightmare demon. She repeats ‘akuma ni tsukareta’ over and over as her sword attacks become delayed, sluggish – like she’s exhausted but can’t stop swinging.”
That exclusive route was later removed after the creator accused someone of leaking the activation code. Hence the "exclusive" tag.
Youmuin the Nightmaretaker uses the "Akuma ni Tsukareta Exclusive" route to deconstruct the concept of the "strong female protagonist." Instead of a power fantasy, the player experiences a management simulation of attrition. The paper concludes that the "Devil" in this title is not a supernatural entity, but the abstract concept of Burnout itself. The game’s enduring interest lies in its refusal to grant a "clean" victory, forcing the player to live within the cycle of exhaustion they helped create. Though textual, the “Exclusive” edition is described as
Standard RPGs utilize the "Hero vs. Demon" trope, where the Demon represents an external threat to be eliminated. Nightmaretaker subverts this. Youmu is not saving the world; she is running a business. The "Akuma Exclusive" route highlights this moral ambiguity.
In this route, Tei acts as a mirror to Youmu. Both characters are effectively "workers" within the nightmare ecosystem. By pursuing the Exclusive route, the player acknowledges that their goal is not the purification of the devil (the traditional Touhou solution), but the incorporation of the devil’s chaotic energy into their business model. The "fatigue" inflicted by Akuma becomes a resource to be harvested. This creates a cynical, yet compelling narrative loop where suffering is commodified.
The keyword “youmuinthe nightmaretaker akuma ni tsukareta exclusive” is more than a search term. It’s a modern internet folktale – a fragment of creative energy from a fan who wanted to see Youmu Konpaku suffer, hesitate, and fight through supernatural exhaustion. The exclusivity, the deletion, the broken links: all of it adds layers of mystique. “You fight a version of Youmu whose phantom
Whether it ever truly existed as a complete game mode or just a few altered sprites and a haunting MIDI track, the idea of a demon-weary Youmu has taken root. And in that sense, the nightmare taker succeeded.
The Exclusive version is said to contain:
Only 200 copies were reportedly made, each hand-numbered. The packaging features limited-edition art of Youmu with glowing red eyes and chains wrapped around her swords.
